Surface Paradise is a body of work, by local artist Michael Donnelly, exploring expanded painting and its relationship to architecture, when structure and form are released from their roles as purveyors of purpose. Immersive landscapes reminiscent of buildings with post-human intent, ambiguous in their meaning, reveal the inconsequential future of a world devoid of subjectivity. The facade of the surface falls away to expose the horror of infinite possibilities, unknowable and unquantifiable, leaving each of us a singular glimpse of a pulverising eternity.
BIO
Michael Donnelly is an artist and arts worker living on Bundjalung country, Lismore, NSW. His practice is a broad investigation of abstraction and transcendence through multiple mediums including painting, assemblage, performance and sound.
A predominantly self-taught artist, Michael augmented his skills in 2017 by undertaking a BA in Visual Arts at Southern Cross University.
He is also currently a co-director at Elevator ARI in Lismore, NSW.
