Place, explores landscapes on the north and mid-north coast and Davis's spiritual connection to Country, through ancestral links, family, identity and community.
Charmaine Davis is a Goori Woman who is descended from the Gumbaynggir and Bundjalung Nations.
The artwork is inspired by the landscapes of Lionsville, Grafton and Nambucca Heads. From mountain landscapes at Lionsville where the family's annual Smoking Ceremony is performed to the ocean landscapes of Nambucca Heads and finally the Mighty Clarence River which always calls her home.
“Place tells the history of this country through an Aboriginal lens, highlighting travesties that have occurred and the ongoing impacts,” Davis said.
Davis creates stunning visual portals that allow the viewer to connect with her art and cultural expression. ‘It’s in my blood to create’ she says.
This exhibition follows on from the first-ever Aboriginal Women’s exhibition at Lone Goat Gallery in 2019.
Davis’s creations are held in numerous private collections across Australia and overseas and have been acquired by the City of Sydney, Grafton Regional Gallery and Ipswich Art Gallery. She is a member of the Boomalli Aboriginal Artist Co-operative, Sydney.
To be opened by local Nationals Member of the Legislative Council, Ben Franklin, and coinciding with the official launch of the Gallery renovation, funded through the Stronger Country Communities Fund.
Lone Goat Gallery 2021 interim program has been supported by the Arts Northern Rivers through the NSW Government Arts Restart Funding.
