CARAPACE:

NOUN

            1. The hard-upper shell of a tortoise, crustacean, or arachnid.

1.1 Something regarded as a protective or defensive covering.

Oxford English Dictionary 2018

Jeremy Hawkes is a Northern Rivers based artist with over 25 years’ experience exhibiting in Australia & internationally, and is a founding member of the artist-run group Epicormia Collective. This is his first exhibition with Lone Goat Gallery, and his first solo exhibition in over a decade.

Carapace is an exhibition of both recent works and a re-imagining of a number of pieces to reflect his current practice and ideas. As an artist who identifies as living with disability, Jeremy uses a variety of media including works on paper, paint, sculpture and digital media to explore identity, the body as a system of architecture in relation to technology and pathology.

Using a number of motifs with subjective meaning, the works in Carapace describe a period of increased involvement with pathologies. How does the self-respond to being identified as different, both physically and neurologically?

How does this inform a sense of self-identity and ways of examining the world? Whilst the Carapace is a protective and shielding measure, it is also a growth and an expansion of knowledge, a contingency and an evolution.

THE GHOST IN THE MACHINE - PERFORMATIVE DRAWING & FILM
Jeremy’s story has recently been shown in a short documentary film, The Ghost in the Machine, produced in collaboration with local film makers HW Collective. The opening night will feature a live performative drawing by Jeremy of The Ghost in the Machine.

Diagnosed with early-onset Parkinson's Disease, Jeremy suspends his medication, allowing the tremors to suffuse his work. The resulting drawing will remain on show throughout the exhibition.

An act of surrender in the search for liberation, artist Jeremy Hawkes unleashes the ghost within. Official Selection: Sheffield FF, 2017; Cannes Entre'2 Marches, 2017, Watch Dog Human Rights, 2017; Flickerfest Byron All Shorts, 2017.
